1. SHERWOOD FOREST
Sherwood Forest is a one thousand-acre residential community in the mountains of Western North Carolina, managed by the Sherwood Forest Homeowners Association (SFHA). Its guiding principles were formulated by its members and are recorded to ensure that the special qualities of this community continue to be enjoyed by those who follow us.
2. THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
One of Sherwood Forest’s special qualities is our strong commitment to enjoying and protecting the natural environment of our mountain ecosystem. We live in harmony with our natural surroundings while maintaining a desirable balance between nature and the human presence.
SFHA owns and preserves around 300 acres of woodland, five lakes, numerous streams, and about 20 miles of hiking trails. Roads, utilities, and amenities are managed to minimize their impact on the natural environment.
3. THE SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT
Sherwood Forest is a friendly community that thrives in the spirit of cooperation and volunteerism. We respect each other’s privacy and freedom and aim to preserve a social environment that is tolerant and accepting of individual differences.
SFHA owns and enjoys the amenities of Sherwood Forest. Recreational amenities include not only our lakes and trails, but also an 18-hole, par-3 golf course, a junior-Olympic swimming pool, tennis courts and an area set aside for gardening. Robin Hood Centre and Robin Hood Barn provide venues for frequent social gatherings and meetings.
We enjoy the social aspects of volunteering as well as its cost benefits. It’s through volunteers that we not only govern Sherwood Forest and manage its finances, but we operate the swimming pool and tennis courts and maintain our lakes, roads, and other common properties.
Common or shared interests among our members are responsible for a number of social groups in Sherwood Forest. Most of these are open to all members and include a lecture series, a memoirs group, a native plants group, a women’s group, and an occasional “men’s night out.”
Several community-wide picnics are held each year at Robin Hood Barn. A member’s private social life is as active as he or she chooses.
4. GOVERNANCE AND THE FUTURE
SFHA is a non-profit organization registered under the laws of the State of North Carolina. We operate under membership-approved Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, Covenants, and a set of Regulations & Community Standards. Each of these is in consonance with our Framework of Principles.
From its membership, SFHA elects five to seven persons to serve on its Board of Directors. Each serves a two-year term. An Architectural and Environmental Review Committee is appointed to prescribe and insure members’ compliance with reasonable rules and regulations concerning the use of private property. About 25 other committees and groups of volunteers work to protect and enhance our social, natural, and physical environment and to manage and review our financial operations.
Our system of governance seeks to minimize centralized power and preserve in the membership a natural willingness to act in accord with our community principles. The membership can and does have a major voice in important decisions, a voice expressed in many ways, including forums and surveys and its votes at membership meetings. Our governance seeks community consensus as well as the resolution of differences in a spirit of cooperation.
SFHA is committed to managing its inevitable growth and other changes in a way that seeks to preserve the special qualities of Sherwood Forest: its wonderfully balanced natural and social environment.
