Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary
What does this mean?
The Sherwood Forest Community and the Sherwood Forest Golf Course are both members of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP), as certified by Audubon International. Such dual certification is unique in our region and is a source of pride among members of our community.
ACSP certification means that Sherwood Forest has developed and is implementing an environmental management program with the goal of conserving natural resources for the benefit of biodiversity - native animals, plants, and other living things - and the quality of life of our residents.
On a practical level, environmental management involves minimizing the release of pollutants; preservation of forested land and certain unique habitats; non-introduction and removal of exotic organisms; monitoring of soil chemistry on our golf course and water quality in our lakes, streams, and rivers; an integrated pest management program for our golf course; and mindful and moderate environmental disturbance while maintaining our amenities.
ACSP certification also includes a commitment to environmental education. The Sherwood Forest community currently sponsors a yearly visiting naturalist program, a year-round series of lectures on nature, and occasional environment-centered lectures by members of our community.
